Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan now a BJP leader has had his security upgraded to the Y plus category due to perceived threats according to officials on Wednesday. Security at Chavan residence in Mumbai and his hometown Nanded has also been increased. Previously Chavan had Y category security cover but now he will have the protection of two security personnel under the Y plus cover. The decision to upgrade his security was made by the VIP security department of the state police in light of perceived threats. Chavan aged 65 recently joined the BJP after leaving the Congress. He was nominated by the BJP for the Rajya Sabha election from Maharashtra and was declared elected unopposed on Tuesday.
