On Tuesday morning, authorities lifted the curfew entirely from the riot-affected Banbhoolpura area of Haldwani, effectively ending the 12-day-long restrictions imposed after violent clashes erupted over the demolition of an “illegal” madrasa. The curfew was officially lifted at 5 am, as per an official directive reported by PTI. Throughout the curfew period, the administration had intermittently provided relaxation for varying durations. The violence initially broke out on February 8 following the demolition of the madrasa in Banbhoolpura. Locals responded by hurling stones and petrol bombs at municipal workers and police officers, forcing many to seek refuge in a police station. Subsequently, the mob set fire to the police station. During the unrest, six rioters lost their lives, and over 100 individuals, including police officers and members of the media, sustained injuries, according to police reports. Authorities have taken 68 individuals into custody in connection with the violence, and their assets have been seized. Additionally, ten people were arrested on Monday alone. Nainital Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Prahlad Narayan Meena informed reporters that among those arrested on Monday is Arbaz, who allegedly provided materials for making petrol bombs used during the riots against police officers and municipal corporation workers.
