Ashwin Ramaswami a 24 year old software engineer is poised to become the first Gen Z Indian American to enter United States politics with his candidacy for the state senate. Generation Z also known as Zoomers includes individuals born between 1997 and 2012. He is a second generation immigrant his parents migrated to the US from Tamil Nadu in the 1990s. If elected, he would represent District 48 of Georgia as the first Indian-American State Senator. Additionally, he would be Georgia’s first Gen Z State Senator and the only state legislator with both a computer science and a law degree. Ramaswami a Democrat aims to succeed incumbent Republican Shawn Still who faced indictment alongside former President Donald Trump for the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol. With a background in civil service, Ramaswami has focused on cybersecurity, election security, and technology policy research. He has collaborated with nonprofits, startups, and small businesses to leverage technology for public benefit and job creation.Born and raised in Georgia Ramaswami has contributed to election security efforts as part of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and served as a legal fellow in the Georgia Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division. He graduated from Stanford University in 2021 with a degree in computer science. Ramaswami, who identifies as Hindu, has a deep interest in Indian culture and philosophy, having grown up attending Chinmaya Mission Balavihar, where he learned about epics like the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavad Gita.
