Ilker Çataks The Teachers Lounge Germany’s official entry for Best International Feature at the Oscars is a gripping drama that delves into the complexities of school dynamics. Set within the confines of a school staffroom the film explores the conversations and power dynamics among teachers. Carla Nowak (played by Leonie Benesch) is the new math and PE teacher dedicated to her work and striving to connect with her students. However her idealism is shattered when she witnesses a culture of suspicion and institutional racism within the school. A situation arises where a student Ali is unfairly accused of theft leading Carla to take matters into her own hands by setting up surveillance to catch the culprit. Told from Carlas perspective the film maintains a tense atmosphere encapsulating the entire society within the schools walls. Cinematographer Judith Kaufmanns use of a 4:3 aspect ratio adds to the claustrophobic feel of the setting. Marvin Millers score enhances the sense of impending turmoil.
